Mindy Van Wart, MA, Resident-in-Counseling

Mindy is on a life-long scavenger hunt, looking for creative ways to support and honor her favorite group of people—anyone who feels overlooked or left out. That search has expanded and taken different forms over the years, from being a hospice volunteer to working alongside adult artists with disabilities.  Most recently this quest led her to study art therapy at George Washington University and then to internships at Dominion Hospital, A Wider Circle, and the GW Art Therapy Clinic. It turns out that art therapy (which doesn’t have to be fine art, just visual ways of communicating) offers unique tools to help support people in understanding, processing, and expressing their internal realities.  Mindy’s therapeutic philosophy is a bouquet of ideas from Person-Centered, Existential, and Gestalt therapies, but most of all she believes in therapy that’s experiential. When she’s looking for fun, you might find Mindy exploring a new town, trying all the desserts, or just relaxing with her husband and cats.
